Pop-ups: How to turn them into a conversion booster instead of a source of irritation? [Written by CCV Shop].

07 February 2023

You may remember pop-ups from the old days. Those big, colourful and flashing pop-ups that popped up as soon as you visited a website. Because they were intrusive, pop-ups got a bad reputation and were abandoned for a long time. But these days, pop-ups are back in style. If used correctly, a pop-up is one of the best ways to improve the conversion rate on your web shop. In this blog, we will tell you more about different types of pop-ups and give you practical tips for creating effective pop-ups.

What are pop-ups and what can you use them for?

A pop-up is a small window displayed on top of a visited page. It is activated by the intention, context or behavior of a visitor. For example, when someone visits a specific page or has stayed on your website for a certain amount of time. The idea is that a pop-up offers added value to your visitors and therefore does not irritate them. It is therefore important that you think carefully about what you want to achieve with your pop-up before you actually start using it. Only then can you measure whether the pop-up is effective and can you shape the pop-up in such a way that it actually adds value for the visitors of your website. Different goals you can use a pop-up for are:

  • Stimulating sales
  • Generating leads
  • Improving customer experience
  • Expanding your mailing list

For example, you can use a pop-up to increase the number of newsletter subscribers. In this case, you could show the pop-up when someone is visiting your blog. By doing so, your pop-up is relevant and can motivate someone to sign up for your newsletter. A pop-up is also suitable for increasing the number of sales on your web shop. For example, you can give a visitor a discount code through a pop-up. This way, you can encourage the visitor to complete the purchase if he has products in his shopping cart. You can even set-up a pop-up in such a way that the visitor sees the pop-up when the visitor is about to leave the website.

Different types of pop-ups

You can determine how you will use a pop-up based on the goal you want to achieve with the pop-up. There are different types of pop-ups you can use, including:

  1. Scroll pop-ups: This pop-up is activated as soon as the visitor scrolls a certain amount on the webshop.
  2. Exit pop-ups: This pop-up appears as soon as the visitor has the intention to leave the webshop.
  3. Click pop-ups: This pop-up appears as soon as the visitor clicks on a certain link or image on your webshop.
  4. Delayed pop-ups: This is a pop-up which is shown as soon as the visitor spends a certain amount of time on the webshop.
  5. Content based pop-ups: These pop-ups only appear when the visitor visits a certain page.
  6. Entry pop-ups: A pop-up that is displayed as soon as someone visits the webshop.

But, how are you able to use these different types of pop-ups? Another example you can use if you want to stimulate sales on your Webshop, is using pop-ups to achieve a higher turnover rate per order. If a potential customer has placed shoes in their shopping cart and wants to check out, you can show a pop-up in which you display protective spray for shoes with the advantages of this product. By doing so, you can convince the visitor to add the spray in their shopping cart as well.

Tip: Use pop-ups to create a sense of urgency. You can show a visitor on your web shop a pop-up with a 10% discount code which is only valid for 24 hours. This motivates your visitor to make a quicker purchase on your web shop.

What does a good, effective pop-up look like?
Create a pop-up that matches the design of the rest of your web shop. Use colours from the brand and create a similar vibe. This way, visitors to your web shop will have the feeling that the pop-up actually belongs to your web shop and is not a misplaced advertisement. It has already been mentioned in this blog, but a pop-up should also be relevant for your visitors. You do this by using the right message, timing and placement for your pop-up. You can tailor this information to the interests of your visitors. Do this by using the information you can gather on your visitor, like pages visited, device and location. If a visitor is not interested in your offer after all, they should be able to easily click the pop-up away. Lastly, use A/B testing to know which pop-ups work the best for your web shop. A different image or title can increase your sales significantly.

When can pop-ups negatively affect your visitors’ experience?
When a pop-up is shown too often, it is counterproductive. Therefore, make sure that a pop-up is not shown twice to a visitor in one session. The purpose of a pop-up is to stand out. Showing multiple types of irrelevant pop-ups in one session can also cause irritation. There is a big chance that a visitor will see it as spam and will leave your web shop.
